Wildlife from a jeep, then paddle back downriver

A half-day outing in the Camargue combining a 4x4 safari with a driver-guide, a prepared picnic eaten along the Petit Rhône, and a kayak descent of the river back to the starting point. The two routes — one by vehicle, one by water — show the same landscape from different angles. Live guide in English or French; children from age 8 welcome.

Step-by-step itinerary

Camargue Safari, Picnic, and Kayak

  • 4x4 Safari in Camargue
  • Picnic by Petit Rhône
  • Kayak descent of Petit Rhône
  • Return by mini-bus to start

The Experience

The day starts in a 4x4 with a driver-guide who knows the Camargue's back routes and wildlife. You move through the wetlands and salt marshes on terrain a regular car cannot reach, stopping where birds, horses and other animals appear. The guide speaks English or French and points out what moves through the landscape. After the safari ends, the group moves to the Petit Rhône, where a picnic prepared by a local caterer waits in the shade — you eat there, by the water, before the second half begins.

Then you get into a kayak and paddle downstream. The river descent is the complement to the morning's drive: you move through the same Camargue at water level instead of from a vehicle seat, and the current carries you back toward the starting point. A mini-bus collects the group at the end and returns everyone to where the day began. The two routes are designed to work together — the jeep shows you the terrain and the animals; the kayak shows you the water and the banks from inside it.

Is this one for you?The four- to six-hour window leaves room for a morning or afternoon outing without consuming a full day, so you can pair it with other plans in Provence. The combination of jeep and kayak suits travelers who want to move through a landscape two ways rather than watch it from one vantage point, and the picnic break means you eat where you are instead of returning to town.

Top questions

What's the Camargue like as a landscape?

The Camargue is a vast wetland and delta in southern France where the Rhône meets the Mediterranean, known for wild horses, flamingos, and salt marshes. The 4x4 safari reaches areas inaccessible by regular road, and the kayak section floats through the river channels that cut through the same ecosystem.

Is the picnic included, or do I bring my own food?

A full picnic prepared by a caterer is included and delivered to the riverbank at the end of the safari, so you eat there before kayaking. You do not need to arrange or bring food.

How long does the whole outing take?

The full experience runs between four and six hours from start to finish, covering the safari, the picnic break, the kayak descent, and the return by mini-bus.

What languages does the guide speak?

The guide conducts the tour in English or French, so you choose the language when you book.

Can children join this outing?

Children are welcome from age 8 onward. The safari and kayak descent both accommodate younger paddlers within that age range.
