The experience

The tour starts at the pier at 9am with an introduction to the island's layout and natural history. From there you move through the art glassmakers' studios, then climb to viewpoints and a Neolithic rock shelter to see how the island's geology shaped human settlement. A century-old tree and the remains of a shipwreck mark the landscape as you walk toward the Birlot mill, one of the last remaining tidal mills in Brittany, and the Croix de Maudez with its views across the water. The morning break at Milk Brehatines gives you time to rest and taste local dairy products alongside tea, coffee and ice cream.

The afternoon splits between the coast and the island's working interior. You'll see the Peacock Lighthouse, the northernmost in Brittany, and walk Croa beach, where protected plant species grow in the sand. A second break at GAEC de Kervilon, an organic vegetable farm, includes a vegetarian snack made from local produce and a chance to see how the island feeds itself. The final stretch takes you past the Bourg to watch local life, then down to Guerzido beach with its fine sand, before finishing at Port Clos for the 6:15pm or 6:20pm departure depending on which ferry company you're using.

The walk covers the whole island's ecology, history and working landscape without rushing any single stop. You'll see how geology, tidal power, fishing, farming and tourism have shaped Brehat over centuries, and you'll taste what the island produces. The guide speaks French throughout, and the pace assumes a high level of fitness. This is walking, not strolling, across nine hours with two substantial breaks.
