Summary

Canyoning in Annecy’s Angon canyon means laughter, cold water and a few wobbly knees

You’ll squeeze into a wetsuit and follow your local guide down Annecy’s Angon canyon—rappelling beside waterfalls, sliding into crystal pools, skipping (or braving) jumps along the way. Expect laughter, chilly splashes and moments where time slows down between mossy rocks and sunlight above. Photos are included so you can relive every awkward face or victory grin.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed at the Angon canyon was the sound — water echoing off stone, somewhere below us. We’d just zipped up our neoprene wetsuits (which are way harder to get into than you’d think) and our guide, Antoine, grinned at us like he knew what was coming. The walk up is short but steep enough to make you question your breakfast choices. My niece kept stopping to poke at wildflowers. I was mostly trying not to trip over my own feet.

At the top, you see this narrow ribbon of water cutting through rock — it looks almost gentle until you hear it up close. Antoine showed us how to clip in for the first rappel and cracked a joke about “French waterfalls being polite.” I didn’t expect my heart to race so much before even stepping off. The first descent is cold — really cold — but after that, it’s like your brain switches from nervous to giddy. There’s this moment where you slide down a natural toboggan and just splash into a pool so clear you can see the pebbles on the bottom. One of the kids shrieked with laughter; I think we all did.

I skipped one of the jumps (not mandatory, thank God), but watching my brother land with a big splash made me wish I’d tried it anyway. The canyon walls are close and green with moss, light flickering through leaves overhead. At one point Antoine pointed out some tiny fish darting around our feet while we caught our breath — little details I wouldn’t have noticed on my own. By the end, we were soaked, tired, and already talking about which photo would be least embarrassing when they posted them online later.
