Day 1 — Nadi sightseeing and mud pool visit

We were already slipping off our shoes outside the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple when I realized how much color there is in Nadi. Our guide, Jone, pointed out the carved gods along the temple roof—he said some of them were shipped from India, which I wouldn’t have guessed. The air smelled faintly of incense and something sweet I couldn’t name. I tried to pronounce one of the deities’ names; Jone just grinned and told me to keep practicing. It was early but already warm enough that my shirt stuck to my back.
After that, we wandered through a handicraft market in town. There was this woman weaving mats by hand—her laugh was louder than anyone else’s—and she let me try for about three seconds before rescuing her work from my clumsy fingers. The Namaka fruit market was next: piles of pineapples and these tiny green chilies that made my eyes water just looking at them. I bought a mango that dripped down my wrist—sticky and perfect.
The Garden of the Sleeping Giant felt quieter somehow, like someone had turned down the volume on everything except birdsong. Orchids everywhere—purple ones with petals like velvet, yellow ones that looked almost fake in the sunlight. Jone knew all their names but didn’t quiz us (thankfully). We ended up sitting on a bench under some massive ferns for longer than planned; it just felt good to do nothing for a bit.
I wasn’t sure about the mud pools at Sabeto Hot Springs—I mean, who actually likes being covered in mud? But it turns out it’s weirdly relaxing. The mud was cool and grainy between my toes at first, then warm as you sink into the water after. A couple of local kids splashed each other nearby and their laughter echoed across the pools. My skin felt different after—maybe softer? Or maybe I just wanted to believe it worked. Either way, I still think about that view over the hills while we dried off in the sun before heading back.
