The experience
The Danakil Depression sits in Ethiopia's Afar region and ranks among the most hostile environments on the planet. The landscape is a maze of solidified lava, rock and salt flats, punctuated by geological formations that exist almost nowhere else: bright yellow hot springs, lakes of bubbling mud, and lava that burns blue. Temperatures routinely exceed 35 degrees Celsius and can spike to 48 degrees. The tour moves through this terrain in a Toyota Landcruiser, starting with a seven-hour drive from Semera that begins on smooth asphalt and deteriorates into rough desert track as the Danakil closes in.
The first night centers on Erta Ale volcano. After arriving at base camp, you hike for an hour and a half to the crater rim, reaching it around 7:00 PM as the sun sets. The lava lake glows beneath you. The blue flames are real, burning from sulfur deposits in the rock. You spend time on the rim, then descend back to camp for dinner. The next morning, you wake before dawn to hike back up and see the crater a second time, watching the lava lake in daylight before the three-hour drive to Hamed Ela begins.
Day two and three shift focus to the salt and the people who extract it. Lake Asale is a massive natural salt lake where you can swim. Around it, local Afar miners dig salt from the ground, shape it into rectangles, and load it onto camel caravans. A practice that has changed little in centuries. The sunset over the lake is the day's centerpiece. On the final morning, you drive to Dallol, the lowest point on the tour and arguably the most visually striking. The kaleidoscopic landscape is built from acidic springs that have stained the ground in greens, reds, and yellows; fumaroles vent from salt mounds; and a salt canyon cuts through the terrain. You watch miners at work here too, then drive back to Semera for your flight to Addis Ababa.

Top questions
What is Erta Ale and why do people hike it at night?
Erta Ale is an active volcano in the Danakil Depression with a persistent lava lake inside the crater. You hike to the rim in the evening (a climb of about an hour and a half), so you arrive around sunset when the lava glows brightest. The blue flames from burning sulfur are most visible in low light.
Can I actually swim in Lake Asale?
Yes. Lake Asale is a natural salt lake, and the tour includes time to swim in the water. The high salt content makes you buoyant, similar to the Dead Sea or the Great Salt Lake.
What makes Dallol different from the other stops?
Dallol is the lowest point on the tour and one of the hottest places on Earth, with average temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius and occasional spikes to 48 degrees. The landscape is unlike anywhere else: acidic hot springs have painted the ground in bright greens, reds, and yellows, and salt mounds dotted with fumaroles create an otherworldly terrain. You see Afar miners extracting salt here and watch them load it onto camels.
How long is the drive from Semera to the Danakil?
The drive from Semera to Erta Ale base camp takes around seven hours. The roads start smooth and asphalted near town but become progressively rougher (eventually turning into a maze of lava rock, sand, and occasional palm-lined oases) as you enter the desert proper.
What kind of accommodation is provided?
You camp all three nights. The tour provides camping gear, and a cooking team prepares meals at each camp. Water, coffee, tea, and snacks are included throughout the days.
Do I need to be very fit to do this tour?
The tour requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The hikes are not long (the Erta Ale crater rim hike is about an hour and a half each way), but the heat is extreme and the terrain is rough. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
