Step-by-step itinerary

Hot air balloon flight over York

  • Meet on site at booking time
  • Help set up the balloon
  • Attend 15-minute safety briefing
  • Enjoy 45-60 minute balloon flight
  • Help pack the balloon away
  • Celebrate with Champagne toast
  • Return by minibus to start point

The Experience

The experience starts on the ground. You arrive at the launch site and spend roughly 45 minutes helping the pilot and crew inflate and prepare the balloon: a hands-on part most people find more fun than they expect. The pilot then gives a 15-minute safety briefing before you step into the basket. Once airborne, you have 45 minutes to an hour watching York's historical landmarks and the rolling Yorkshire countryside pass beneath you, the city shrinking as the balloon drifts higher.

After landing in the countryside, you help pack the balloon away, then gather for a champagne toast (soft drinks available if you prefer). A minibus then takes you back to where you started. The whole outing (setup, flight, landing, celebration and return) takes between 3 and 4 hours, so it fits into a morning or early afternoon without consuming the entire day.

Children from age 8 are welcome. In-flight photographs and video are available to purchase for £20 once you land. The balloons operate from April through October, and the experience includes your flight certificate and all fees and taxes.

Top questions

What will I see from the hot air balloon over York?

You'll see York's historical landmarks and the surrounding Yorkshire countryside from above as you drift overhead for 45 minutes to an hour. The bird's-eye view shows the city layout and the farmland beyond it in a way ground-level sightseeing cannot match.

How much of the 3 to 4 hours is actually spent in the air?

The flight itself lasts 45 minutes to an hour. The rest of the time covers setup (roughly 45 minutes), the safety briefing (15 minutes), packing down the balloon after landing, and the champagne toast and minibus ride back to the launch site.

Do I have to help set up and pack down the balloon, or can I just watch?

You're invited to help with both the setup and the packing, and most people find it rewarding. It's optional, so you can step back if you prefer, but the crew welcomes the extra hands.

When does this balloon flight operate?

Champagne balloon flights over York run from April through October each year. You book a specific date and time when you reserve your spot.

What happens if I don't drink champagne?

A soft drink alternative is available for the toast after landing, so everyone can celebrate regardless of what they drink.

Are children allowed on the hot air balloon?

Children are welcome from age 8 onwards. They participate in the same experience as adults, including helping with setup and the flight itself.
