Shepton Mallet Prison Escape Room: The Hole
The Hole is designed to be inescapable. Your job is to prove otherwise.
The Hole is a 60-minute escape room set inside a dark, steel-reinforced prison cell at Shepton Mallet Prison in South West England. You and your team work together to solve puzzles and break out before time runs out, then explore the historic prison grounds before or after. Entry to the prison is included, along with a Games Master who runs the experience.
The Experience
You have 60 minutes locked inside The Hole, a specially designed cell with electronic doors and pitch-black conditions. The setup is deliberate: the darkness and confinement are part of the puzzle. Your team solves riddles and finds clues to outsmart the cell and reach freedom. The Games Master guides you through the experience and watches from outside, so you're never truly alone even when the door locks behind you.
Before or after the escape room, you can walk through Shepton Mallet Prison itself. The historic site gives you time to explore the grounds at your own pace, so the full outing stretches beyond just the 60-minute game. Service animals are welcome, and the site is suitable for all fitness levels, though the escape room does take place in darkness and confined quarters.
You choose your group size at checkout: solo, pairs, or groups up to five. Each option is priced separately, so you book only the spots you need. The Games Master speaks English and runs the game live, not through a screen or app.

Is this one for you?Book solo if you want a personal challenge, or bring up to four others to solve puzzles as a team inside one cell: the confined space and darkness mean group dynamics matter as much as the riddles themselves.

How dark is The Hole during the escape room?
The Hole is pitch black: darkness is a core part of the puzzle design. Bring a headlamp or use your phone light if you need it, but the challenge is built around working in low visibility.
Can I explore Shepton Mallet Prison on my own, or is it a guided tour?
Shepton Mallet Prison is self-guided. You can walk the grounds before your escape room slot or after you exit The Hole, at your own pace.
What happens if my team doesn't escape in 60 minutes?
The Games Master will let you out after the time is up. Escape rooms are designed to challenge. Not every team makes it out, and that's part of the experience.
Do I need to book a group, or can I do this solo?
You can book for one person or a group up to five. Solo players compete against the puzzle alone. Larger groups work together in the same cell.
Is there parking or public transport to Shepton Mallet Prison?
Public transportation options are available nearby. Check local transit routes to the prison, or confirm parking details when you book.
