The experience
The tour starts wherever suits you (a city centre landmark, your hotel, anywhere you name), and from there your guide shapes the day around what you want to see. You're not following a fixed itinerary or moving with a group. Instead, you walk at your own pace through the medieval streets, and if a particular corner or period of history catches your attention, you stop and explore it. The guide carries an iPad with illustrations that bring the sites to life as you stand in front of them, and you get a map to keep afterward.
The core stops include the Minster, seen from the outside; the Shambles, the best-preserved medieval street in York and the inspiration for Diagon Alley; the 13th-century city walls, where you can walk the most picturesque section and see across the city; and a Roman corner tower that has stood for nearly two thousand years. You'll also pass York's royal palace, where Henry VIII and Charles I stayed, and the Norman monastery ruins that Henry VIII left behind. One spot, a handsome piazza near the Minster, lets you turn in a circle and see two thousand years of history layered in the buildings around you.
The whole tour runs two hours, but the pace is yours. Because it's private, there's no waiting for a group to catch up or moving faster than you want to go. If you'd rather spend longer at one stop or skip another entirely, that's the arrangement you make when you book. The tour is outdoors, so the Minster and any museums stay outside the scope unless you arrange separate entry.

Top questions
What exactly do I see on the Shambles?
The Shambles is York's most celebrated medieval street, with buildings that lean and narrow lanes that feel unchanged from the Middle Ages. It inspired the Diagon Alley set in the Harry Potter films and is the best-preserved street of its kind in York. Your guide walks you through it and explains the history of the buildings and the street itself.
Can I walk the city walls during the tour?
Yes. The tour includes a walk along the most picturesque section of the 13th-century city walls, where you get spectacular views across York. You walk the walls themselves, not just look at them from below.
Do I need to pay extra to see inside York Minster?
The tour includes the exterior of York Minster, the largest medieval gothic cathedral in the UK. Entry to the interior is separate and not included, so you can choose whether to add it on your own time or skip it.
How does the guide customize the route?
Once you book, the operator contacts you to arrange where you'll meet and to ask what areas of York interest you most. If you want to focus on Roman history, medieval architecture, royal connections or anything else, the guide builds the route around your preferences while making sure you see the highlights.
Is this tour suitable if I'm not very fit or I use a wheelchair?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The route is wheelchair accessible, all surfaces are accessible, and service animals are welcome. If you have mobility questions, mention them when you book so the guide can plan the best route for you.
