The Experience

I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice in Oxford to be the smell—old stone and a bit of rain hanging in the air, mixing with something sweet from a bakery nearby. Our guide, Tom, started us off right away on a walk through these twisting lanes. He pointed out where C.S. Lewis used to duck into pubs (I tried to imagine him grumbling about students), and showed us the Bodleian Library—honestly, it looked like something out of a fantasy novel. There was this hush inside the courtyard, even though we were just steps from busy streets. Students zipped past on bikes, scarves flying behind them. I kept thinking how these old walls have seen so many generations come and go.

The coach ride to Cambridge gave me time to thaw out my fingers (should’ve brought gloves) and chat with some folks from Spain who were as lost in thought as I was. When we got there, the light had shifted—softer, almost gold on the university buildings. We wandered over to Senate House; our guide explained how this is where students get their degrees. It felt formal but also kind of joyful—like you could almost hear echoes of applause if you listened hard enough. Then there was the Corpus Clock. It’s stranger than photos make it look: this big gold disc with a weird grasshopper thing ticking time away. Apparently Stephen Hawking revealed it? I watched the lights flicker around its edge and tried to figure out what time it actually was (no luck).

By late afternoon my feet were sore but my head was buzzing—in a good way—from all the stories and little details Tom shared along the way.
