The Experience

First thing I noticed was how our driver-guide, Gareth, greeted everyone by name at the Liverpool pickup. He joked about the Welsh weather (“If you don’t like it, wait five minutes”) and handed out audio guides for anyone who wanted them. By the time we rolled into Conwy, I’d already learned how to pronounce “ll” (sort of). The town felt like something out of an old storybook—stone walls curling around tiny shops and seagulls arguing overhead. There were families with kids playing knights, older couples reading plaques aloud to each other, everyone sort of lost in their own adventure. The last stop was Betws-y-Coed—a village tucked into the trees with rivers everywhere and painters set up along the bridge. It started drizzling but nobody seemed to mind; actually it made the place smell like wet leaves and woodsmoke from one of the cafés. I had tea by a window watching hikers come in muddy boots—felt like the perfect end to the day trip from Liverpool.
