The Experience

We met our guide—full medieval garb and all—right between the Black Gate and Castle Keep. I’ll admit, I was running on too little coffee and didn’t expect to get pulled straight into Roman history before we’d even left the lamppost. The way she described Pons Aelius, you could almost feel the old stones under your feet (even though it was just pavement and a bit of drizzle that morning). There was this weird mix of city noise and sudden quiet as we listened—like the past was waiting behind every corner.

Grey Street surprised me. I’d heard it was “beautiful” but that doesn’t really cover it; the curve of the buildings just pulls your eyes along, and there’s always someone rushing by with a Greggs bag or chatting in Geordie. Our guide pointed out little carvings I’d never have noticed, told us about Grey’s Monument and all these people who apparently shaped Newcastle by hand. She made a joke about how the Victorians loved columns (she wasn’t wrong), and then we wandered towards St Andrews—the oldest church here. It felt smaller than I expected but somehow heavier with stories.

I think my favorite bit was when we stopped by what’s left of the town walls. The wind picked up right then, and our guide got this glint in her eye talking about sieges and Hotspur—she even tried to mimic jousting (not very convincingly). Someone asked about Black Friars and she launched into tales of “holy men” who weren’t exactly saints, which got a few laughs from our group. There were smells from a nearby bakery mixing with cold stone air—oddly comforting.

The tour ended at the Black Gate, looming in that way only real medieval stuff does. We got our Newcastle Castle tickets (included in the tour) so you can go inside after or come back later—mine sat in my pocket for two days before I finally explored inside. There’s something about standing where kings once stomped around that sticks with you longer than you’d expect.
