The Experience

I thought I knew London’s food scene — turns out, not really. The first stop in Soho was this old-school bakery that smelled like warm sugar and butter before we even stepped inside. Our guide, Sam, was already waving from the corner with his yellow umbrella (easy to spot in the drizzle). He started telling us about how Soho used to be all jazz bars and secret clubs — I half-listened while biting into a pastry that left flakes everywhere. It was messy but worth it.

Walking towards Covent Garden, we passed a street performer belting out Oasis (badly), which felt about right for London. At one point Sam pointed out a tiny coffee shop that’s been open for over a hundred years — he said the espresso here “tastes like history,” which made me laugh until I actually tried it. There’s something about drinking coffee where generations have sat before you; maybe it’s just the caffeine talking but I felt oddly connected to the city for a second.

The real highlight? An 800-year-old pub tucked behind some scaffolding (London always seems under construction). We tried scotch eggs and pork pies — apparently exclusive to this day trip food tour of Soho and Covent Garden. I didn’t expect to like the scotch egg so much; it was still warm, yolk just set, salty in the best way. Some locals at the bar gave us a nod when we awkwardly clinked our pints together. It felt genuine — not staged for tourists.

By the time we hit the fish & chips spot (Sam swore it was “the best in London” but honestly every Brit says that), my jeans were tight and my phone memory full of blurry food pics. There were viral desserts too — people queuing up just to get their hands on them, snapping photos before eating. I still think about that sticky sweetness days later. We ended somewhere near Covent Garden’s market stalls, tired but happy, rain sticking my hair down in little curls. Not everything went as planned (I spilled sauce on my sleeve), but somehow that made it better.
