The Experience

“You’re not really in London until you’ve nearly been run over by a red double-decker,” our guide Sam joked as we dodged across the Strand. He’d met us right at our hotel — which was honestly a relief, since I still can’t figure out which way to look before crossing here. Sam asked what we wanted to see, but also what we wanted to feel (his words). My partner blurted out “Changing of the Guard” while I mumbled something about Harry Potter. Sam just grinned and said, “Right then. Let’s make it weirdly perfect.”

I didn’t expect Trafalgar Square to smell like coffee and pigeons at the same time. There was a busker playing Oasis under Nelson’s column, and for a second it felt like the city was performing just for us. At Westminster, Sam told us how Big Ben is actually the bell — not the tower (I’d always gotten that wrong). He pointed out tiny details on St. Paul’s Cathedral that I would’ve missed: scorch marks from WWII, little carved faces in the stone. The wind off the Thames was colder than I thought it’d be in June, but it woke me up in a good way.

We wandered through Covent Garden where street performers tried to get us involved (I declined — my juggling days are over), and Sam explained why there are no actual piccadills at Piccadilly Circus. I still don’t quite get it, but he made us laugh anyway. Lunch wasn’t included but he steered us into this pub with sticky tables and proper chips — exactly what I wanted without knowing it. The whole day felt like hanging out with a friend who just happens to know every shortcut in London.
