The Experience

I’ll be honest, I nearly missed the start—couldn’t find the right side of Westminster for the meetup and ended up asking a guy in a bowler hat (he just grinned and pointed). Anyway, we got sorted, helmets on, and our guide—Samira—checked everyone’s bikes. She had this way of making you feel like you’d known her for ages. The electric bike was less intimidating than I thought; after wobbling once near Big Ben (no one saw, or at least pretended not to), I was rolling along with the group.

The route zipped us past the Houses of Parliament and along the Thames path. It smelled faintly of river mud and coffee from somewhere—I never figured out where. We stopped at St. Paul’s Cathedral for a quick story about its dome surviving WWII, then Samira waved us over to Shakespeare’s Globe. She tried to get us to pronounce “Clink” like a Londoner (I failed). At Clink Prison Museum, she explained where “thrown in the clink” comes from; there’s something about hearing that right where it happened that sticks with you.

Borough Market was pure chaos in the best way—steam rising off paella pans, someone shouting about fresh oysters, spices everywhere. We got time to wander and grab snacks (I went for a sausage roll; flaky pastry stuck to my gloves). If you’ve only seen Tower Bridge in photos, riding across it is another thing altogether—the wind was sharp but I couldn’t stop grinning. By then my legs were starting to feel it even with the electric assist, but no one seemed in a rush. Samira kept telling us little things about each bridge or building that don’t make it into guidebooks.

I still think about that view from Gabriel’s Wharf—St Paul’s against a weirdly blue sky for London. The tour ended before I wanted it to; funny how two hours can go so fast when you’re actually moving through a city instead of just looking at it from a bus window.
