The Experience

Is it possible to feel like a kid again just by walking down Oxford Street? I wasn’t sure, but the second those star-shaped lights flickered on above us, something shifted. We met our guide near the station—she had this woolly red scarf and a grin that made you feel like you were in on some secret. She handed out these silent disco headsets (I almost laughed at first), but honestly, hearing “Fairytale of New York” while weaving through crowds felt weirdly magical. You could still hear the city—the bus brakes, someone shouting about mince pies—but it was all wrapped up in music.

We ducked off the main drag into Neal’s Yard, which looked like someone had spilled a box of fairy lights everywhere. I tried to take a photo but my fingers were too cold—should’ve worn thicker gloves. There was this smell of cinnamon drifting from somewhere, maybe one of the little cafés? Our guide told us how Seven Dials always does their own thing with the lights—she pointed up at this canopy overhead and said locals come every year just to see if they’ve changed it. I liked that.

Leicester Square was packed, honestly, but in a good way—like everyone was buzzing from mulled wine and bratwurst fumes. Someone handed me a Santa hat (no idea who) and I just rolled with it. Regent Street’s angels were bigger than I remembered; our guide said they add more feathers every year or something like that. In Soho, we stopped to look at these wild drawings hanging above the street—turns out local schoolkids design them each year. That hit me for some reason—just kids drawing what Christmas feels like here.

I didn’t expect to actually feel lighter after two hours wandering around London with strangers and silly glasses on my nose (the snowflake ones make everything sparkle). But there it is—I still think about those lights when December rolls around.
