From kneeling to standing in a single session, paddling Newquay's sheltered coves

A 2-hour stand-up paddleboarding lesson and guided tour along Newquay's coastline, taught by a qualified instructor. You'll learn to launch, balance, paddle and steer on the water, starting on your knees and progressing to standing as you gain confidence. All equipment (board, paddle, wetsuit and buoyancy aid) is provided at a purpose-designed centre near Towan beach. The instructor shares local history and wildlife knowledge as you paddle past smugglers' coves and into Newquay Bay.

The Experience

Can you really learn to paddleboard in a couple of hours? Yes, the sport is designed to progress fast, and the lesson is built around that. You start on dry land with a water safety briefing and basic paddle technique, then enter the water from a sheltered section of coastline where you'll kneel on the board first, getting a feel for balance and control before you stand. Your instructor guides you through each step, and by the time you leave the water, you'll be cruising under your own power.

The route itself is the draw. From the centre near Towan beach, you paddle past the shadowed coves around Towan Head, once smugglers' territory, and into Newquay Harbour and Bay. Your instructor weaves in the area's history and points out the wildlife that lives along the coast. The whole thing takes about two hours, and the sheltered launch point means even complete beginners can start safely.

Everything you need is waiting at the centre: a paddleboard sized for you, a paddle, a wetsuit and a buoyancy aid. The only thing you bring is a moderate level of fitness and a willingness to get wet. Children over 8 are welcome, and the instructors adjust the pace to match the group.
