The experience
You arrive at the studio at 10am. The instructor gives you an apron, makes you a drink, and walks you through basic ring designs while measuring your finger. Then you sit at the workbench and start: sawing your silver to length, learning to pattern and texture it, stamping it with your own marks. The silver needs annealing at this stage. The instructor explains why and teaches you how to use the torch. You forge the ring to shape, saw it to size, then move to soldering, using the torch to join the seam yourself. The instructor shows you how to file the join smooth, buff out any scratches, and polish the whole thing until it's ready to wear.
The whole process takes 2–3 hours, which means you can fit it into a free afternoon without the day disappearing. You leave with a ring nobody else has, made by your own hands, and the knowledge of how to make another one. The materials cost £10–£30 extra at the end, depending on how much your finished ring weighs.
