The Experience

The tour starts at a vantage point on the White Cliffs overlooking Dover Castle, the harbour and the English Channel—on clear days you can see the French coast. From there the guide drives you through country lanes and rolling hills, passing the 13th-century church of St John the Baptist in Barham with its green copper spire and Kent peg-tiled cottages, then through Bishopsbourne in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the stately home of Bourne Park once hosted Mozart. The route shows you Patrixbourne's Norman church, built from stone shipped from Caen in France and decorated in French style with a wheel window dating from the late 12th century.

Chilham gets a 45-minute stop—the village has appeared in Emma, The Canterbury Tales, Poirot and Miss Marple because its 15th-century square, black and white Tudor buildings, Jacobean castle and cobbled streets look like a film set. You have time for morning tea and photographs before heading to Canterbury for three hours. Your guide gives an overview of the city from Roman times onward, but the time is yours to spend: visit Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey (the oldest monastery in England, founded in AD 597), explore medieval streets, or stop for lunch at a pub along the River Stour. On the way out you pass St Martin's church, also from around AD 597, where you can see structures from Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval periods layered into the walls.

The return route passes Wickhambreaux, a medieval village green surrounded by church, manor house and inn, then Ickham with its white weatherboard cottages and 13th-century church, and ends at Wingham on the ancient coastal road—many buildings date to the 1200s.
