The experience

Stephen drives and guides the whole day in a Land Rover Defender 130, collecting you from your hotel and setting the pace as you walk through Canterbury's medieval lanes. You'll pass the Westgate Tower, the Crooked House and the Marlowe Theatre on your way to Canterbury Cathedral, which sits on one of England's oldest Christian sites and forms part of a World Heritage Site. A tour inside the Cathedral is optional and can be arranged in advance if you want it.

After Canterbury, you head to Dover Castle, founded in the 11th century and positioned on the cliffs as the closest point to mainland Europe: the reason it earned the name "Key to England." The castle's role in the 1940 Dunkirk rescue is part of the story Stephen tells as you tour the keep and the grounds. Entry is included. The views of the White Cliffs stretch across the water from here, and the castle itself sits high enough that the landscape opens up around you.

The final stretch moves through Kent villages (Godmersham, Elham and Chilham among them) that Stephen knows well after years living in the region.
