The Experience

The ride starts in Brighton's heart and moves through The Lanes before reaching the seafront. You'll pass the Royal Pavilion and hear about its eccentric design, then cycle along the promenade past the Palace Pier: stopping to learn the story of Brighton's three historic piers. The route takes you by the world's oldest working aquarium and the Volk's Electric Railway, the oldest functioning railway in Britain, as the guide shares the layers of Brighton's past.

Once you leave the bustle of the seafront, the landscape shifts. You cycle alongside the Undercliff Path for most of its 5km length, with the English Channel on one side and white chalk cliffs rising on the other. The path narrows and quietens, and the water either laps gently or crashes against the shore depending on the tide. This stretch is the spine of the tour: the reason the route exists.

Rottingdean is where the ride ends, a Victorian village tucked into the coast. You stop for refreshments and time on the shingle beach. If you want, you can walk into the walled gardens that once belonged to Rudyard Kipling. The return journey takes you back through The Lanes, the narrow twittens (a local word for alleyway) that cut through the old town, and past one of Brighton's oldest theatres. Bikes and helmets are provided, and the guide leads the whole group at a pace everyone can manage.
