Suit up, open a hive, inspect the colony, take home honey

A hands-on beekeeping class in the Sussex countryside, 1.5 hours from London, where you suit up and inspect a live hive under expert guidance, then conduct your own hive inspection to assess the colony's health. The experience includes beekeeping equipment, lunch or afternoon tea with local Sussex produce, and a jar of locally produced honey to take home. Minimum age is 18. The class runs three hours.

The experience

You start by suiting up in full beekeeping gear (suit, bee tool and smoker), then join an expert beekeeper to open and inspect a thriving hive. The guide walks you through what you're seeing: honey stores, brood chambers, pollen supplies, and if you're lucky, the queen bee herself. Everything is explained as you go, and you can ask questions throughout. This is not a lecture. It's watching someone who knows the work do it, close enough to understand how it actually happens.

Then it's your turn. Under supervision, you open a hive yourself, get up close to the colony, and conduct your own inspection. You assess the hive's health and watch how the bees work together. This is the part most people come for. The moment you're actually doing the job, not just watching it happen. After the hive work, you sit down to lunch or afternoon tea made with local Sussex produce, a natural pause to process what you've just learned and seen.

You leave with a jar of locally produced honey (set or runny, your choice), and the knowledge of what happens inside a hive. The whole experience runs three hours and takes place in the Sussex countryside, close enough to London that you can do it as a day out without a long drive.

Is this one for you?Book this if you want to actually work with a hive, not just watch one. The hands-on inspection is what sets this apart. You're not observing from a distance. You're opening the hive and assessing the colony yourself under guidance. It suits anyone curious about how bees actually live and work, from 18 onwards, as long as you're comfortable with moderate physical activity and being suited up outdoors.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What do I actually do when I open the hive myself?

You conduct a full hive inspection under the guide's supervision: you open the hive, get close to the colony, and assess its health by looking at the brood, honey stores and pollen. The guide is there to explain what you're seeing and step in if needed, but you're doing the work.

Do I need beekeeping experience to book this?

What's included in the lunch or afternoon tea?

The meal features local Sussex produce and is included in the experience. The timing depends on when you book: morning sessions include lunch, afternoon sessions include tea.

What should I wear for the beekeeping?

Beekeeping equipment including a full suit, bee tool and smoker is provided. You need to bring your own boots. The rest is covered. All areas are wheelchair accessible.
