The Experience

First thing I remember is the sound — shoes on stone as we gathered outside the Abbey Hotel, right where the old city wall used to be. Our guide (Paul, who’d lived here as a student — you could tell by the way he talked about The Circus) started us off with a laugh and pointed out a crooked window above Sally Lunn’s. The air smelled faintly sweet from the bakery; someone behind me whispered about the buns but I was too busy trying to picture Romans walking these same streets. We didn’t go inside the Roman Baths but Paul made them come alive anyway — something about how hot water still bubbles up after two thousand years stuck in my mind.

We ducked through narrow medieval alleys (one so tight my backpack scraped the wall) and suddenly spilled out onto Pulteney Bridge. The river below looked almost silver in that light — maybe it was just the weather, or maybe it’s always like that here. There were people selling flowers near Guildhall Market, and for a second I just stood there listening to them banter in that soft West Country accent. It felt like everyone knew each other. We crossed into Georgian Bath, Queen Square first (I nearly tripped on uneven cobbles — classic), then up to The Circus where Paul told us about John Wood’s obsession with circles. He grinned when he said it: “No straight lines if he could help it.”

The Royal Crescent really does feel bigger than it looks in photos — all pale stone and curved sky. Paul pointed out which houses had been film sets; I tried to imagine Jane Austen walking here but mostly I just noticed how quiet it got for a minute, even though there were plenty of people around. On our way back we passed the Jane Austen Centre (didn’t go in), then wound down past the Theatre Royal and finally ended up by Thermae Bath Spa. Steam drifted above the roof — not what I expected on an English afternoon. Paul left us there with a handful of stories and suggestions for what to do next. I still think about that view from The Circus sometimes, especially when things get noisy back home.
