The experience
Avon Gorge sits on Bristol's doorstep, and the Idleburger Buttress, a 30-metre rock face, is where you'll spend a half day climbing and abseiling under instruction. You start with a safety brief and learn how to fit your helmet, harness and climbing shoes before you touch the rock. A live guide leads the session and stays with you through the climbing and the descent by abseil, so you're never working alone on the wall.
The buttress is close enough to the Clifton Suspension Bridge that you'll see it from the rock, and the gorge itself frames the whole experience. Three and a half hours is long enough to climb multiple pitches and practice abseiling, but short enough to leave the rest of your day free in Bristol. The route suits anyone with moderate fitness. Children from age 12 can join, so families often book together.
