Two UNESCO sites, one afternoon: volcanic ash froze a Mayan village in time

A private tour of Joya de Cerén and San Andres archaeological sites in El Salvador, with hotel pickup, air-conditioned transport and entrance tickets. You walk through Joya de Cerén, called the Pompeii of America, where a volcanic eruption in 600 AD buried a Mayan settlement and preserved its homes, tools and daily life intact. A second stop at an ancient ceremonial site rounds out the half-day.

Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Joya de Cerén and San Andres

  • Explore Joya de Cerén Archaeological Site
  • Visit ancient Mayan structures at San Andres

The experience

Joya de Cerén sits three to four hours from most hotels, and the tour handles the drive itself: pickup from your accommodation, air-conditioned transport, parking and both entrance tickets are included. You arrive at the site on your own schedule, without the wait of a group departure or the logistics of renting a car.

The site itself is small and walkable. Volcanic ash buried this settlement around 600 AD, and the eruption happened fast enough that people fled with their lives but left everything else behind: homes, cooking vessels, tools, even food stored in clay pots. The structures and artifacts sit exposed now, arranged so you can see how a Mayan family organized a household, where they worked and how they lived. Joya de Cerén earned its UNESCO listing in 1993 and the nickname "Pompeii of America" because so little was lost to time or looting. The second stop, an ancient ceremonial site with Mayan structures, offers a different angle on the same culture.

Bottled water travels with you in the vehicle. The tour does not include a guide who speaks during the visit, so what you learn comes from reading the site's own markers and from your own knowledge of pre-Columbian history. If you want narration, you'll need to arrange that separately.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3).

What exactly is Joya de Cerén and why is it called the Pompeii of America?

Joya de Cerén is a Mayan settlement buried by volcanic ash around 600 AD, preserved so completely that archaeologists found homes, tools, food storage and daily-life objects still in place. The rapid burial and excellent preservation earned it the Pompeii comparison and a UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1993.

How much walking is involved at the archaeological sites?

The sites are small and walkable at an easy pace. Joya de Cerén is compact enough to cover in under an hour, and the second ceremonial site is similarly modest in scale, so the day is not physically demanding.

Does the tour include a guide who explains what I'm seeing?

The tour does not include a guide. You explore the sites on your own and read the on-site markers. This means you set your own pace and focus on what interests you most, though you won't have someone narrating the history as you walk.

What's included in the price and what do I need to pay for separately?

Hotel pickup, air-conditioned transport, parking and entrance tickets to both sites are included. Gratuities, drinks beyond bottled water and any guide service are separate.
