The experience
The route starts with a distant view of three volcanoes (Cerro Verde, Izalco and Santa Ana) rising above sugar cane fields, then descends into Izalco itself. This historic town sits at the base of Izalco Volcano and holds two churches side by side, one built for Spanish colonists and one for indigenous people, each with its own architecture and history. The guide walks you through both before moving on.
Nahuizalco comes next, a small town famous for its market and for pina coladas and sweetbread quesadillas sold along the route. A local artist has filled parts of the town with mosaics, and you'll pass these as you move through. The town is where you see Pipil descendants (indigenous people whose ancestors built much of what you're walking through) going about their daily work. From there, the route takes you to Salcoatitan to see its murals, then to Ataco, a colorful village where you explore the handicraft shops and galleries at your own pace.
The tour runs 8 hours total, with the drive back to your hotel taking roughly as long as the drive out. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and returns you there. Traffic and time of day will shift the exact return time, but the operator targets around 4pm. The guide is with you the whole way and speaks English or Spanish.
