Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Cerro Verde and Izalco town
- Hike Cerro Verde volcano rim
- Drive through Izalco town
- Watch and try pupusa-making
- Stroll colorful streets of Izalco
The experience
The tour departs one hour after your ship arrives, giving you time to clear the port. A minivan picks you up and drives to Cerro Verde National Park, where the hike begins along the volcano's eroded rim. The crater itself is dense with cloud forest, and from the trail you see across the valleys toward Izalco and Santa Ana volcanoes. Your guide points out the ecosystem and the volcanic history as you walk: the park sits on an ancient extinct volcano, and the landscape tells that story in the rock and the vegetation around you.
On the way down, you pass through Izalco, a town founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and still lined with colorful colonial streets. This is where the pupusa-making happens. You can get hands-on and craft your own pupusa (the Salvadoran flatbread filled with cheese, beans or meat), or watch and taste them fresh off the griddle if you prefer. Either way, you eat what comes out of the pan. The guide stays with you through the town and the cooking, sharing the history and the tradition as you go.
The minivan returns you to the ship with enough time before departure. The whole excursion is built around the ship's schedule, so the timing is locked in from the start.
