The experience

If you have an evening free and want something beyond the usual tourist loop, this combines the adrenaline of riding a quad bike at night with the slowness of camping by natural hot springs. You control the bike yourself through rural trails as the light fades, then arrive at a river where the water stays warm year-round. The campsite has toilets and common areas. You can soak in the springs, sit by the campfire and move at your own pace through the night.

Breakfast comes at dawn, after which a guide takes you on foot to a thermal waterfall and a secret pool tucked away from the main tourist routes. Both sites sit in the same river system but require the guided walk to reach them. The whole experience runs 16 hours from start to finish, so you'll need the evening and the following morning free. Tent, mattress and flashlight are provided. Bring a change of clothes and any food you want beyond breakfast, or order from the local restaurant on-site.

A live guide in English or Spanish leads the dawn walk and is with you throughout. Children from age 5 can ride (infants sit on an adult's lap), and the operator notes the activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health. Moderate fitness helps. Personal protective equipment (helmet and glasses) is included and required.
