You’ll spend a full day exploring Mahmya Beach on Giftun Island—snorkeling vibrant reefs just steps from shore, relaxing on soft sand, enjoying fresh seafood lunch, and soaking up Red Sea views. It’s easygoing fun for all ages with guides who know their stuff.
The day started early—Hurghada’s morning air already warm as we waited outside our hotel for the Mahmya trip. Our driver was right on time, chatting with us about the best places to grab coffee in town. The marina was buzzing with other travelers, some still half-asleep, others snapping photos of the boats lined up along the dock. We boarded one of the Mahmya boats, found a spot on deck, and set off across the Red Sea. The ride took about an hour; you could feel the salty breeze and hear nothing but waves and a few excited kids pointing out flying fish.
As we got closer to Giftun Island National Park, the water turned that unreal shade of turquoise you see in travel magazines. Boats can’t go all the way in to protect the coral, so we hopped onto a smaller boat for the last stretch. Stepping onto Mahmya Beach felt like landing somewhere secret—soft white sand underfoot, clear water stretching out forever. Our guide, Ahmed, explained how “Mahmya” means “protected area” in Arabic and pointed out where to find the best snorkeling spots just off shore.
I grabbed my snorkel gear (provided) and waded in—the reef is right there, no long swim needed. Schools of tiny fish darted around bright coral heads; I even spotted a curious parrotfish nibbling at some rocks. If you’re not into snorkeling all day, there’s plenty else: beach volleyball games going on near the lounge area (with free Wi-Fi), an aqua trampoline for kids bouncing non-stop, or just quiet time stretched out on a sunbed with a cold drink.
Lunch was served at the island restaurant—lots of seafood options plus Italian dishes if you want something familiar. I tried grilled fish with rice and a bit of salad; simple but fresh. Later in the afternoon, we wandered over to the bar for drinks before catching our boat back to Hurghada. The sun was starting to dip as we sailed home—everyone looked tired but happy. Back at the marina, our driver was waiting for us again and dropped us off at our hotel with plenty of stories (and sand) to take back.
