The experience

Your guide picks you up from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise and drives about 40 minutes to the west bank. The day starts at the Valley of the Kings, where pharaohs built hidden tombs to protect their mummies and treasures. From there you move to the Temple of Hatshepsut, the mortuary temple of Egypt's female pharaoh, built into the cliffs. Before crossing back to the east bank, you stop at the Colossi of Memnon, two massive statues that stand alone in the fields: a common photo stop on the route.

After lunch at a local restaurant on the east bank, the tour continues to Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex in the world. Your guide walks you through the towering columns, pylons and courtyards, explaining the history carved into the walls. The final stop is Luxor Temple, set on the riverbank in the heart of the city, where you see its enormous statues and obelisk before being driven back to your hotel or cruise ship. The full day runs about eight hours from pickup to drop-off.

Bottled water is provided throughout the day. Lunch is included but drinks during the meal are not, so you may want to budget for beverages. Entrance fees to each site are paid separately by card when you arrive. These are not included in the tour price and vary by location.

What exactly is inside the Valley of the Kings that I'll see?

The Valley of the Kings is the burial ground where pharaohs were entombed, and your guide takes you into the actual tombs carved into the rock. You walk through chambers decorated with hieroglyphics and paintings, seeing where mummies and treasures were hidden thousands of years ago.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the sites, or is everything included?

Transport is fully included. A private air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel or cruise ship and takes you to every site, then returns you at the end of the day. You only pay entrance fees at each location when you arrive.

Is the tour physically demanding?
