The Experience
I didn’t expect the Nile to be so quiet at this hour—just a few birds overhead and the soft slap of water against the wood. The boat owner, Ahmed, waved us aboard with a grin that made me feel like we’d met before (we hadn’t). The felucca looked simple but felt solid underfoot. As we pushed off from Luxor’s east bank, I caught the smell of fresh mint from his tea flask. It mixed with something earthy—maybe from the fields nearby where you could see farmers bending over rows of green. I tried to ask about the crops in my clumsy Arabic; Ahmed just laughed and pointed out wheat and corn, then mimed a chicken flapping its wings. We both cracked up.
We drifted past both banks of the Nile—one side golden in late sun, the other shadowy and cool. There was a moment when everything went quiet except for some distant drumming (which turned out to be on our own boat). Ahmed’s cousin started tapping on a small drum and suddenly there was music bouncing off the water. It wasn’t loud or showy—just enough to make us smile and clap along while we shared snacks and sipped sweet tea. I still think about how soft that breeze felt on my face, carrying little hints of river mud and something floral I couldn’t name.
The whole thing felt unhurried—no one rushing us or trying to sell anything extra. Just sailing on the Nile in Luxor with locals who seemed genuinely happy to have us there. At some point I stopped checking my phone for photos and just watched ibis birds skimming low over the water. Not sure how long we floated before heading back; time got kind of blurry in that good way.
