You’ll cross the desert from Safaga to Luxor, explore ancient tombs in the Valley of the Kings, walk through Karnak Temple’s giant columns, and hear stories from a real Egyptologist guide. It’s a full day of history, scenery, and local flavor—all in one trip.
Our day started early, right at the cruise exit in Safaga port. The air was already warm, and I could smell the sea mixed with a hint of diesel from the buses. Our Egyptologist guide, Ahmed, greeted us with a big smile and handed out cold water bottles—trust me, you’ll want those for the desert drive ahead. The ride to Luxor took a couple of hours, but watching the landscape shift from flat sand to green fields near the Nile kept me glued to the window.
First stop: Karnak Temple. It’s massive—columns everywhere, some with faded paint if you look up close. Ahmed pointed out carvings I’d never have noticed on my own. There were a few local vendors near the entrance selling scarab keychains and sweet tea; I grabbed one for the road. Lunch came next, at a small spot just off the main street—simple grilled chicken and rice, nothing fancy but filling.
Crossing the Nile felt surreal. The boat was basic, but the breeze was a relief after the heat. The Valley of the Kings is quieter than I expected; inside the tombs, it’s cool and smells a bit dusty. The colors on the walls are still bright in places. We also visited Hatshepsut’s temple—her story is wild, and the place looks almost modern from a distance. Last, we stopped by the Colossi of Memnon. They’re huge, but what stuck with me was the sound of birds nesting in the cracks. By late afternoon, we were back in the van, tired but glad we’d seen so much in one day.
