The Experience

Ever wondered if you could actually forget what day it is for a while? I did, somewhere between the steam room and the foam massage at Cleopatra Spa in Hurghada. The driver picked me up right on time—air conditioning already humming—and I remember thinking how nice it was not to have to haggle for a taxi or explain directions. When we got there, the receptionist handed me a little glass of karkadeh (hibiscus tea)—sweet, cold, kind of floral. I’d never tasted anything like it. There was this faint scent of lemon in the air too, maybe from the towels?

They gave me a locker key to keep around my wrist—felt reassuring somehow. In the sauna I could hear someone quietly humming an Arabic tune (I think?) through the wall. The heat made my skin tingle and my thoughts just sort of melted away. After that came the hammam part—scrubbed down by hands that clearly knew what they were doing. Not gonna lie, I was a bit nervous about being exfoliated by a stranger but our attendant just smiled and said “relax… all good,” so I did. The foam was warm and almost slippery-soft; it’s hard to describe but I still think about how light my arms felt after.

Then there was this face mask in the lounge—cool and creamy, while I watched another guest try (and fail) to take a selfie without getting product everywhere. We laughed about it with one of the staff who joked that everyone leaves looking “ten years younger.” Maybe not quite true but… close enough for today. The 45-minute oil massage after that nearly put me to sleep; I lost track of time completely until someone gently tapped my shoulder to say my driver was ready whenever I was.
