The Experience

Your guide picks you up and takes you first to Cairo Tower on Gezeira Island, where the 187-meter height gives you the city lit up at night — the Nile, the buildings, the streets all visible from above. This is the vantage point most visitors miss because they come during the day; the night version is what the tour trades on.

From there you sail the Nile on a traditional felucca, the wooden boat with a single sail that has carried people on this river for centuries. The boat moves slowly enough that you can watch the riverbanks, the buildings reflected in the water, and the lights strung along the shore. Then comes dinner at Al-Fishawi Cafe in Al-Moez Street — you pick between koshary (a layered rice, pasta and lentil dish), foull (stewed fava beans) or falafel, with Egyptian tea or coffee. The cafe itself is part of the experience; it has been there long enough that it is woven into the neighborhood's rhythm.

Al-Moez Street is a walking tour through a thousand-year-old quarter that was the heart of Islamic Cairo. The street runs between two gates in the old city walls and holds medieval mosques, domes, and buildings that make up one of the world's largest collections of Islamic medieval architecture — El Aqmar Mosque, the Mosque of El Saleh Talai, the Blue Mosque, al-Hakim Mosque among them. Walking it at night, when Egyptians are out and the street is alive with its own habits and traditions, is different from the daytime version. Khan el-Khalili market, the final stop, is a maze of stalls selling spices, carpets, tobacco pipes, souvenirs and textiles. It is crowded and loud and built for browsing, not rushing through.
