experience

What’s the experience like?

The drive out to Abu Simbel starts early—honestly, you’ll want to catch the temples before the midday heat settles in. Our guide, Ahmed, chatted about the Nile and pointed out tiny villages as we passed. The air smelled faintly of sand and diesel near the checkpoint, but once we got closer to the site, it was just quiet desert wind and the distant calls of birds.

Standing in front of those massive statues of Ramses II, I felt tiny. The sheer size is wild—each statue’s face is weathered but still so clear after all these centuries. Ahmed shared how UNESCO moved the whole thing stone by stone in the 1960s to save it from flooding when they built the Aswan High Dam. You can actually spot faint seams where they pieced it back together if you look close.

Inside, cool air hits you right away. The walls are covered in carvings—scenes of battles and gods everywhere you look. There’s a hush inside that makes every footstep echo. We spent time in both temples; one for Ramses himself, and another for his wife Nefertari (her temple’s smaller but honestly just as detailed). On our way out, a local vendor offered sweet hibiscus tea—tasted a bit tangy after all that dry heat.
