The experience

The tour starts in Aswan with a pickup from your hotel, airport or train station. You'll spend the first day visiting three major sites: the High Dam (an engineering feat that controls the Nile's flow), the Unfinished Obelisk in the ancient granite quarry, and Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Each stop takes roughly an hour to two hours, and you return to your hotel by evening.

Day two begins before dawn for the journey to Abu Simbel, where four colossal statues carved into the mountainside mark one of Egypt's most recognizable temples. After several hours there, you head to Aswan railway station and board a first-class train to Luxor. A three-hour ride that lets you watch the Nile valley and modern Egyptian life pass by the window. The train ticket is included. You arrive in Luxor and transfer to your hotel.

The final day covers Luxor's West and East Banks with five major stops: the Valley of the Kings (where pharaohs were buried), the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, the Colossi of Memnon, the Temple of Karnak (described as Egypt's greatest religious structure), and Luxor Temple. Your guide leads you through each site, and at day's end you're transferred back to your hotel, airport or any other point in Luxor you choose.

Is this one for you?Three days means you leave Cairo and return there with two full nights away. If you have only one day free, a single-day Aswan or Luxor tour would fit better. The early Abu Simbel departure (before dawn on day two) is what fits the temple visit and the afternoon train into one day, so plan for an early wake-up.
