The experience
The day starts with pickup in Quito at 7:15 am and a drive into the highlands. A couple of hours out, you'll stop at indigenous markets (the Saquisilí market on Thursdays or the Pujilí market on Sundays, depending on the day), where vendors trade goods from the tropical lowlands and the Andes in the same space. You'll visit an indigenous hut to see how local families live, then stop at the Tigua artisans' gallery to see the colorful wooden masks and sheepskin paintings the region is known for. A viewpoint at Toachi Canyon breaks up the drive before you reach the lagoon itself.
At Quilotoa, you walk down into the crater to the water's edge and back up: the main physical commitment of the day. Lunch happens at the lagoon after the walk. The tour wraps with the drive back to Quito, arriving around 6 pm. A bilingual guide (English or Spanish) stays with the group throughout, and entrance to Quilotoa Lagoon is included in the price. Transportation is comfortable and authorized for tourist use.
