The experience
Your guide picks you up from your hotel at 8:30 and drives you through Quito's narrow streets to visit the city's architectural landmarks: Independence Plaza with its monument to the First Cry of Independence, the Cathedral, the Government's Palace, the Company Church, and San Francisco Church, a 16th-century complex with 13 cloisters and over 3,500 works of religious art. The Basilica of the National Vow, the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas, is also on the route.
The Teleferico cable car takes you northwest of the city to 4,050 meters (13,200 feet), where you can hike the trails, swing above the vegetation, and see the Andes mountains that surround Quito. On the way north to Mitad del Mundo, you pass through the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve, a collapsed volcano with unique geological formations and biodiversity.
At the Inti Ñan Solar Museum, you walk through outdoor exhibits on astronomical geography and the equator line itself. The museum sits just north of the main Mitad del Mundo complex and lets you experience equator phenomena firsthand: the experiments change how water drains and how your body feels at the line. Chocolate tasting is included before your return to the hotel.
