Paragliding flight by the sea

  • Take tandem paragliding flight
  • Enjoy flight over mountainside and sea

The experience

Montañita's beach sits at the base of a mountainside that feeds thermal winds out to sea, the setup that makes paragliding here work. You arrive at the launch point, get fitted into the harness and equipment by your instructor, then run down the beach together as the wing fills. Once airborne, the sea wind holds you aloft while you and your guide ride the thermals, moving through the sky rather than dropping straight down. The flight covers the coastline in front of the sea, with the peninsula of Santa Elena visible below.

The instructor handles all the flying. Your job is to be in the harness and take in the view. A camera captures video and stills during the flight, so you leave with footage of what you saw from up there. The whole experience (ground time, flight and landing) runs about an hour. Water is provided, and the operator arranges guides who speak English or Spanish, so language is not a barrier to understanding what is happening or asking questions before you launch.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

How long does the actual flight last once we're in the air?

The flight itself lasts around an hour, depending on the wind conditions and how long the thermals hold. The full experience from arrival to landing takes roughly that same timeframe.

What happens if the wind is too weak or too strong on the day we book?

Paragliding depends on consistent sea wind and mountain thermals. If conditions are unsafe, the operator will reschedule you for another day rather than launch.

Do we get to see the video and photos right after we land?

Video and photos are captured during the flight with a GoPro camera and included with your booking. You receive the footage after the flight is complete.

Is there a weight limit or fitness requirement for tandem paragliding?

Tandem paragliding is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The instructor carries the load and does the work. You ride along in the harness.

How do we get to the launch beach near Libertador Bolívar from Montañita?

The launch site is about 10 minutes from Montañita by road. Public transportation options are available nearby, or you can arrange your own transport to the beach.
