The experience

The tour starts at the artisanal fishing market, where you see the catch that supplies Ecuador's kitchens: different species, their prices, what dishes they become. A short walk takes you to where the wooden boats themselves are built, the hulls still under construction. From there the route climbs inland to Montecristi, a small town at the foot of a mountain where Panama Hats have been woven for generations. The name is a historical accident. The hats actually come from here, not Panama. Your guide walks you through the museum and the mausoleum of a celebrated president whose life the guide describes as filled with revolution and dramatic turns, then shows you the artisan workshops where the hats are made by hand. You can buy one if you want, or browse the local goods in the town center and see the wooden colonial architecture around the cathedral.

Lunch happens in a restaurant set inside the Pacoche rainforest. While you wait for your food, you can walk the garden or settle into a hammock. After eating, the tour makes its final stop at the San Lorenzo Lighthouse, which sits on a promontory with views across the ocean. San Lorenzo Beach below is known as a nesting ground for sea turtles that return to the same shore where they were born. The whole day runs five to six hours and includes an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, a small emergency kit, and all entry fees.

The tour is flexible. You can walk as much or as little as you like, and the operators say they'll customize the route if you want to swap a stop or add something. All areas are wheelchair accessible and transportation is adapted for mobility needs. The guide is live and speaks your language. Pickup from the cruise port is part of the booking.
