The experience
Cabarete's zip line course runs across a mountaintop with 7 stations and 2 suspension bridges. One bridge has a fan descender that drops you over 50 feet into an ancient bat cave: the kind of moment that stays with you. The course is ACC certified and open to ages 2 through 92, so the physical setup is there for a wide range of people. Experienced guides walk you through each station and handle the technical side. You operate the equipment and move at your own pace through the canopy.
After the zip line, you head to the botanical park at the base of the grotto. Over 30 squirrel monkeys roam freely here and actively seek out visitors. They'll sit on your shoulders and head, and you can feed them on special plants. The park also has an enclosure for rescue capuchin monkeys that have been rehabilitated from abuse or malnutrition, plus hundreds of other animals throughout the grounds. This is where the best photo opportunities happen in the Dominican Republic, according to the operator.
The whole activity runs about 3 hours from start to finish. Your driver picks you up at the cruise port and brings you back in time to reboard: no stress about the ship's departure. Professional guides speak English and Spanish. Zip line equipment is provided, along with bottled water during the activity. Pickup and drop-off are free if you're staying in or near Cabarete or Sosua. Other ports like Puerto Plata, Taino Bay or Amber Cove carry an extra charge.
