Summary

Caribbean rhythms, coral reefs and Taino stories on Punta Cana’s coast

You’ll sail Punta Cana’s coast with music in your ears, try your hand at shaping Taíno clay figures in a small museum, snorkel over bright coral reefs with all equipment included, and float in Playa Blanca’s natural pool before heading back with new dance moves stuck in your head.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“Try to keep up!” our guide Carlos grinned, already moving his hips way better than I ever could. We’d barely left Bavaro Beach and the music was going — salsa, merengue, then something faster I couldn’t name. The boat felt alive under us, breeze sticky with salt and sunscreen. There was this smell of coconut oil and something sweet from someone’s cup nearby — maybe rum? I don’t know if it was the Caribbean Sea or just the mood, but even my shy friend was dancing by the time we hit open water.

I didn’t expect to actually learn anything about the Taíno people — you hear “show” and think it’ll be just costumes. But at their little museum stop, Carlos showed us how to shape clay into these chunky little ritual figures (mine looked more like a potato). He told us about his grandmother teaching him old stories, and there was this moment where everyone just went quiet listening. The air smelled earthy from the clay dust on our hands. I still think about that part sometimes.

After that we jumped in for snorkeling — honestly, I’m not much of a swimmer but they had all the gear ready and Carlos kept an eye on us. The water off Punta Cana really is that clear blue you see in photos, but it’s different when you’re actually floating above those coral reefs. Saw these tiny neon fish darting around; one tried to nibble my finger (don’t do what I did). And then we stopped at Playa Blanca’s natural pool — waist-deep, warm like bathwater. Someone started a dance-off right there in the water. Didn’t win anything except sore legs.
