Air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi included.★ 4.57 (136)30m–50mUS$ 32View › “The first thing you’ll notice is the sea breeze,” our driver Luis said as he loaded our bags into the back of the van. He grinned like he’d heard every version of jetlag before. I was still blinking from the sudden Caribbean sunlight—my daughter kept tugging at my sleeve, pointing out palm trees she swore looked like “giant green fireworks.” The van was cool inside (thank god for AC), and there was this faint scent of coconut from somewhere—I guess that’s just what Punta Cana smells like when you land in June.
I’d booked this private transportation in Punta Cana mostly because I didn’t want to deal with haggling or waiting around after a long flight. But Luis made it feel less like a transfer and more like a welcome committee. He handed us the WiFi code before we even pulled out of the airport lot (“for your TikTok updates,” he joked). As we drove, he pointed out where locals go for empanadas (“not on TripAdvisor, but better”), and gave us a heads-up about which beach stalls are worth trying. At some point, my son fell asleep against my arm—the kind of deep nap you only get after airports and new places.
The drive itself was maybe 25 minutes? Hard to say—I was watching the sky change colors through tinted windows, half-listening to Luis talk about his favorite baseball team. It’s funny how quickly you can relax when someone else is handling all the details. We passed other vans packed with big groups; ours felt almost too quiet by comparison. When we reached our resort, Luis helped with the stroller and even waited while we fumbled for sunscreen buried at the bottom of a bag. I still think about that small gesture—he didn’t rush us once.
