Feel the ocean breeze as you ride along Puerto Plata’s beaches at sunset. Swim with your horse if conditions allow, relax at a local bar, and soak up authentic Dominican vibes. Perfect for beginners and seasoned riders alike.
There’s something about the air in Puerto Plata as the sun starts to dip—warm, salty, and just a little bit sweet. We hopped into a safari truck around 3:45 pm, and the ride to the beach was quick but lively. Locals waved as we passed through neighborhoods, and you could already smell the ocean before we even saw it. Once we arrived, a small group of horses stood waiting, tails flicking, saddled up and ready. Our guide, José, greeted us with a big grin and made sure everyone felt comfortable—even those who’d never ridden before.
After a quick intro (and a couple nervous laughs), we set off down a gravel path that wound through thick jungle. The air felt cooler under the trees, and you could hear birds calling out overhead. Suddenly, the path opened up to a wide stretch of sand. The Atlantic was right there—blue-grey and endless. I’ll never forget how the horses’ hooves left prints just at the edge of the waves. The sun was low enough to cast long shadows, and you could see local kids playing dominoes near the old Neptune statue on the malecón. It felt like time slowed down for a bit.
We paused for photos with the sea behind us—trust me, you’ll want your camera for this. Then it was off to Bergantin beach for a break. There’s a tiny bar here where you can grab a cold soda or something stronger if you want (not included), and sometimes there are local vendors selling bracelets or shells. If the water’s calm, you might get to swim with your horse—mine didn’t hesitate to splash right in! But sometimes the waves are too strong, so it depends on the day. Safety always comes first; José made sure of that.
The ride back felt different—quieter somehow, with the sky turning pink and the first stars coming out. By 7 pm, we were back where we started, sandy and tired but grinning ear to ear. If you’re looking for something real and a little bit wild in Puerto Plata, this sunset horseback ride is it.
Yes! The guides are patient and will help you feel comfortable even if you’ve never ridden before. They match you with a horse that fits your experience level.
If the ocean is calm and safe, you’ll have a chance to swim with your horse. Sometimes strong waves or currents mean it’s not possible, but your guide will let you know.
Bring your swimsuit if you want to swim with your horse, plus a towel, sunscreen, and maybe a camera or phone for photos. Closed shoes are best for riding.
Bottled water and soda are included in your tour. If you want other drinks or souvenirs at the bar, those are extra.
Your tour includes pickup from hotels in Cofresi, Costambar, Puerto Plata, and Playa Dorada; bottled water; soda; plus all riding equipment and a friendly local guide who’ll make sure you’re safe and comfortable throughout.
