The experience

Encuentro Beach sits on the Dominican coast where consistent swells roll in year-round, making it an ideal place to learn. The lesson starts on the sand with dryland instruction: how to position yourself on the board, how to paddle, how to pop up into a standing position, and how to read the ocean so you know where the rideable waves form. A guide walks you through beach safety and the unwritten rules surfers follow in the water, so you know how to share the break with others.

Once you're in the water, the guide stays close. You'll paddle out to the break, feel the board respond under you as a wave approaches, and practice the pop-up until your body learns the motion. Most people stand up and ride at least one wave in their first session. If you've surfed before, intermediate and advanced coaching focuses on technique: how to turn, how to hold a line, how to read the wave face and move across it instead of straight toward shore. The 2-hour window gives you time in the water without the fatigue that comes from a longer session.

All equipment is provided: a surfboard suited to your size and ability, a wetsuit if the water is cool, and a leash to keep the board from drifting away. Guides are fluent in English and Spanish, so language is not a barrier to instruction.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What should I wear to a surf lesson at Encuentro Beach?

Wear swimwear under the wetsuit the operator provides, or bring your own rash guard if you prefer extra sun protection. Avoid anything with zippers or hard fasteners that could damage the board or scratch you in the water.

Do I need to know how to swim to take a surf lesson here?

Swimming ability helps, but the lesson is designed for all levels. The guide keeps you in shallow water where you can stand, and the board itself floats and supports you. If you're not a confident swimmer, let the guide know before you start.

What makes Encuentro Beach a good place to learn surfing?

Encuentro Beach has consistent waves and a sandy bottom, which means softer landings than rocky breaks. The beach faces the Atlantic swell, so waves arrive regularly throughout the year, giving instructors reliable conditions to work with.

Can I book a private lesson, or do I share the water with other students?

The operator offers both group lessons and private instruction. Group lessons keep costs lower. Private coaching lets you set the pace and focus on your own technique without waiting for others to catch waves.

What if I've surfed before? Can I get coaching instead of a beginner lesson?

Yes. Intermediate and advanced coaching is available. Tell the operator your experience level when you book, and the guide will tailor the lesson to work on technique, wave selection, or whatever skills you want to develop.
