Canyoning in Dominica: 7 abseils, jumps and natural pools
Seven abseils, optional jumps, slides into sulfur springs and a walk back through the forest
A canyoning descent in Dominica's tropical forest with a professional guide, where you abseil down seven waterfalls (maximum 10 meters each), jump into natural pools, slide into warm sulfur springs and swim between rock walls. The guide provides all technical equipment, a neoprene suit, helmet and harness; a waterproof camera captures the day. Two guides minimum lead the group; you can book shared or private. Swimming ability is required; moderate fitness and comfort with heights matter for the abseils.
The Experience
The canyon starts five minutes' walk into the forest from the meeting point. Once you reach the first drop, the sequence unfolds: abseil down a waterfall, swim across a pool, climb out and repeat. Seven abseils in total, each one maximum 10 meters, punctuate the descent. Between them you'll encounter jumps into deeper pools—optional, never compulsory—slides worn smooth by water and stone, and passages through warm sulfur springs that heat the water as you move downstream. The guide controls the pace and decides the order based on conditions and the group's comfort.
All technical gear is provided: harness, helmet, neoprene suit and the rope systems the guide manages. A waterproof digital camera comes along so you don't have to worry about your phone or missing the shots. The guide carries refreshments—a drink and cookies—for the breaks between descents. The return walk takes about 30 minutes through the tropical forest, climbing back up the valley floor to the start point.
You can book this as a shared group or as a private tour with your own guide and party. Either way, at least two guides lead the activity. The guide speaks English or French. Public transportation reaches the meeting area, or you can arrange private pickup depending on which option you choose at checkout. Swimming is compulsory; you'll spend significant time in water. Moderate physical fitness is essential—the abseils demand upper body strength and the walk out requires steady footing on wet rock and root.

What's the difference between the shared group and the private tour option?
The shared canyoning experience runs with other travelers and a guide; the private tour is your group alone with dedicated guides. Both include all equipment, the waterproof camera and refreshments. Private pickup is available with the private option.
Do I have to jump into the pools, or can I abseil down instead?
Jumps are optional and never compulsory. You can abseil every drop if you prefer, or jump some and abseil others—the guide adapts to your comfort level.
What do I need to bring, and what's provided?
Bring a swimsuit and closed basketball shoes for grip on wet rock. The guide provides the neoprene suit, harness, helmet, rope systems and all technical equipment. A waterproof camera is available to capture photos, and the guide carries refreshments.
How deep are the pools, and is swimming ability really required?
The pools vary in depth as you descend the canyon. Swimming is compulsory because you'll cross pools between abseils and spend time in the water. The guide stays with you and controls the pace, but you must be comfortable in water.
What's the walk like to reach the canyon, and how long is the whole activity?
The walk to the canyon start is five minutes through the tropical forest on an easy trail. The canyoning descent itself takes around three and a half hours, including the seven abseils, jumps, slides and swimming. The return walk out takes about 30 minutes.
What are the sulfur springs like, and will they affect my skin?
The sulfur springs are warm natural pools fed by geothermal water. They're part of the descent sequence and safe to swim in. The warmth and mineral content are part of the experience, though if you have sensitive skin or specific concerns, mention them to the guide before you start.
