The experience
The tour leaves Djibouti at 8:30 am in a private air-conditioned Hartop all-terrain vehicle. You reach Dikhil by noon, eat lunch at the Gobad Inn, then drive through the villages of As-eyla and Koutabouya on a track that opens onto Lake Abbé around 5 pm. The landscape shifts from scrub to stark rock formations as the sun sets over the water. You spend the night in a camp near the lake with dinner served at 7:30 pm.
The second morning starts before sunrise at the hot spring near Lake Abbé, then you return to camp for breakfast. After checkout, the route heads toward Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa at 157 meters below sea level. A packed sandwich lunch breaks the drive. At noon you stop at the canyon of Dimbiya, then move to the panoramic view at Goubet. The final stop is Lake Assal itself before the return drive to Djibouti, arriving by mid-afternoon.
Your guide speaks English or French and holds certification from the State Tourism Agency. All transport, accommodation, meals, and park entry fees are included in the price. The vehicles are equipped for off-road terrain, and the camp provides basic overnight facilities with a restaurant serving dinner and breakfast.
