The Experience

"Is that really the castle up there?" I asked, squinting through the morning mist as our little group climbed the lane in Karlštejn. The stone walls felt cold under my palm, and the air smelled like wet leaves and chimney smoke. It was quieter than I expected; just a couple of locals chatting by the bakery below, their voices echoing off the old stones.

The drive from Prague felt like it would be long, but honestly, it didn’t drag at all. Maybe it was Tomas telling stories about Czech kings or maybe it was just watching the fields roll by. By late morning we were in Pilsen. I’m not even a big beer person but standing inside that old Brewery Museum — with its earthy smell of malt and wood — made me want to try everything. Lunch was loud and cheerful (and yeah, I tried to order in Czech… didn’t go well). The Pilsner Urquell tasted sharper than anything back home. There’s something about drinking it right where it started that sticks with you.

Regensburg was our last stop before Munich. The light had shifted by then — softer, almost golden on those medieval buildings. We wandered through narrow cobblestone streets while Tomas pointed out tiny details on doorways I’d have missed on my own. The cathedral bells started ringing just as we crossed the Stone Bridge over the Danube, which made us all pause for a second without really planning to. Honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when things get busy back home.
