“Don’t worry, it’s not haunted: at least not today,” our guide Jan grinned as he unlocked the heavy door under the Old Town Hall. I could smell old stone and something damp, like a cellar after rain. The air was cooler than outside, which felt good after the crowds up on Prague Old Town Square. There’s this hush underground: your footsteps sound louder, and even Jan lowered his voice a bit when he pointed out the crumbling archways that used to be someone’s living room centuries ago. I tried to imagine what it’d be like to have your front door open right onto a street that’s now buried under layers of city.
We ducked through narrow passages where the walls were rough and cold if you brushed them (I did, accidentally). Jan told us about how Prague kept building upwards over time.
