The Experience

A van picks you up at your Prague hotel in the city centre at a time you agree on beforehand. The drive to Český Krumlov takes about 2 hours — 175 kilometers through Czech countryside, the kind of landscape that rolls without drama but holds your attention anyway. You can sit back. There's no navigation to do, no rental car to manage, no guessing whether you're on the right road. The van holds a maximum of 8 people, so it stays small enough that you're not on a coach with forty others.

Once you arrive, Filip, the guide, takes over. You walk up a short hill to Český Krumlov Castle, the second largest castle complex in the country, and he walks you through all five courtyards — each one opens onto the next, and he tells you the stories that go with them. You're not going inside the buildings themselves, just moving through the courtyards and the passages, stopping at the spots where the light hits right and the whole town spreads out below you. He points out where to stand for photographs. After the castle, you come down toward the river, cross a bridge, and there's a medieval restaurant where you can have lunch if you want. Or you can skip it and eat somewhere else in town — that's up to you.

Then you have free time to walk the Old Town on your own. The Vltava River cuts the town in half, castle on one side, the old streets and squares on the other. You've got a couple of hours to wander, look in the shops, sit somewhere with a coffee, or just stand in one of the narrow lanes and let the place settle. Filip gives you recommendations before you go, tells you what's worth seeing and where the better shops are if that matters to you. When the afternoon is done, you meet back at the car park and drive the 2 hours back to Prague, arriving in the evening.
