The experience

The tour starts in Otrobanda, where your guide points out the Queen Emma floating bridge (built in 1888 and part of UNESCO's World Heritage), and the historic murals lining Frederikstraat. From there you cross to Fort Waakzaamheid, a small bastion built in 1803 as defense against the French, with views over the harbor and the Black Mountain. The Queen Juliana Bridge, the highest in the Caribbean, carries you over to Punda, where the route passes through Scharloo's old Jewish neighborhood and its UNESCO-listed mansions.

At Landhuis Chobolobo, the birthplace of Genuine Curaçao Liqueur, you explore the distillery on your own and taste the different liquors they produce (the signature blue, tamarind, chocolate and others) at no extra charge. After the Round Market in Punda (time to browse souvenirs and local goods), you stop at Plasa Bieu for lunch. The meal is your own cost, but it's where locals eat. The tour concludes at Parke di Lucha di Libertad, a park dedicated to the fight for freedom from slavery, its stainless steel gate designed to withstand the sea salt and tell that history.
